Wait, What’s the Earth Economy

The gross world product(GWP) is the combined gross national income of all the countries in the world.

In 2017, according to CIA’S World Factbook, the GWP was around US $80.27 trillion in nominal terms and totalled approximately 127.8 trillion international dollars in terms of purchasing power parity(PPP).

PSYCHE

A recent study has found that asteroid 16 Psyche, which orbits between Mars and Jupiter, could be made entirely of metal and is worth an estimated $10,000 quadrillion- more than the entire economy of Earth.

Note: one trillion= 1,000 billions and one quadrillion= 1,000 trillions

It was first discovered on March 17, 1853, by the Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis and was named after the ancient Greek goddess of the soul, Psyche.

DETAILS

It is one of the dozen most massive asteroids, containing about 1% of the mass of the asteroid belt, and is over 200 kilometers (120mi) in diameter.

(Note: The largest object in the asteroid belt is Ceres. With a diameter of 940 km.)

NASA AND SPACEX’S MISSION TO 16 PSYCHE

The only way we will ever get to see a close-up of what the core of a planet is really like is to pay a visit to Psyche. That’s exactly what NASA is planning to do.

Due to launch in August 2022 from Florida's Kennedy Space Center atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, NASA’S Psyche mission is part of the Discovery Program of low-cost robotic space missions.

The orbiter is due to arrive at Psyche in January 2026 to begin at least 21 months in orbit mapping and studying the asteroid’s properties.
